That man who visited the Furnace Building of FRS

I first came across PJ when in circa 1970, he visited the furnace building of the Fire Research Station, Borehamwood, where I worked as an assistant experimental officer. At the time, FRS was virtually the only fully equipped fire resistance laboratory in the UK. It had been designed in the early 1930’s and in my opinion was a good example of how not to design a fire resistance laboratory. He went away to design the TRADA furnace which was a unique design at that time. Later, I became involved in various Standard committees where Peter was already establishing a solid reputation. When he established the IFC, I was then working for a company owned by UK insurers, and we placed a number of consultancy jobs with the practice. I was part of the UK team on ISO TC 92/SC2 which Peter led for a number of years and this leadership helped enhance his global reputation. We both were keen photographers and during breaks in the meetings, we would go out with our cameras. When I retired, I joined a local club (Park Street Camera Club) and Peter came on a number of occasions to judge our competitions. To say he was an excellent judge was no exaggeration. Terry Day
